Vi racconto PADOVA | Storia, curiosità, arte e cibo

Italy’s Verona, Padova, and Ravenna
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2014 | In the shadow of Venice, we visit three great cities in the Veneto area. Padova is famed for its venerable university, precious Giotto frescoes, and pilgrim-packed basilica. Verona is a hit with aficionados of Roman ruins and Romeo and Juliet fans. And Ravenna, with its shimmering mosaics, was once the western bastion of the Byzantine Empire. We enliven each stop with a tasty dose of Italian "dolce vita." #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #italy

If you are planning to visit the city of Padua (Padova), in Veneto - Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the city, with a sightseeing map on the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Padova city.
In this video:
WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Scrovegni Chapel and Giotto’s frescoes, Basilica of St. Anthony, Palazzo della Ragione, Ghetto, Padua Cathedral (Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta), and Prato della valle.
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a daily tour to better visit the city, with a clear map of Padova city and tips for nearby attractions.
Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Padova city:
To find a a break from the crowds of Venice
To enjoy the genius of Giotto visiting the Scrovegni Chapel
To breathe the atmosphere of a medieval city well preserved
But especially to relax in the historic gardens of the city, starting from the Botanic Garden of Padua, a UNESCO world heritage site!
So, WHAT to see in Padua?
The Scrovegni Chapel cycle of frescoes is considered one of the greatest art masterpieces of the Italian and European 14th century painting. It is the most complete and best preserved cycle of frescoes painted by the Tuscan master Giotto.
The outside of the Basilica of Saint Anthony (1232) is a mix of Lombard, Tuscan and Byzantine styles.
Palazzo della Ragione was built in 1218 and the upper floor, called il Salone, is one of the largest medieval halls of the world.
Ghetto is marked by via Barbarigo, Manin, Canziano, Roma and Marsala. The area is easy to recognise thanks to its narrow streets and vertical buildings.
Duomo: Padua Cathedral, Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta
The design of the Padua Cathedral, started to be built in 1551) is sometimes attributed to Michelangelo, but in fact it was the work of Andrea della Valle and Agostino Righetto.
Prato della Valle is one of the biggest square in Europe (90.000 mq).

Swiss Travel Channel is a YouTube channel of my holiday’s trips videos, taken all around the world since 2008. Some are for pure tourism and others are more of an adventure. The videos usually show the top best tourist attractions, the top things to do and top places to see. The goal is to inspire others on their next vacations. The videos can also be seen as a guide to have an idea of the main highlights and places to explore. I love to take pictures of the nature, traditions and different cultures, to search the must-see spots and show the essentials in my videos, for this reason I always try to create the perfect vacation. Traveling is more than a hobby for me, is a way of life.

Padua (source Wikipedia):
Padua (Padova) is a city and commune in Veneto, northern Italy. Padua is on the river Bacchiglione, west of Venice. It is the capital of the province of Padua. It is also the economic and communications hub of the area. Padua's population is 214,000 (as of 2011). Padua stands on the Bacchiglione River, 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Venice and 29 km (18 miles) southeast of Vicenza. The Brenta River, which once ran through the city, still touches the northern districts. Its agricultural setting is the Venetian Plain (Pianura Veneta). To the city's south west lies the Euganaean Hills, praised by Lucan and Martial, Petrarch, Ugo Foscolo, and Shelley.
Padua appears twice in the UNESCO World Heritage List: for its Botanical Garden, the most ancient of the world, and the 14th-century Frescoes, situated in different buildings of the city centre. (An example is the Scrovegni Chapel painted by Giotto at the beginning of 1300.)
The city is picturesque, with a dense network of arcaded streets opening into large communal piazze, and many bridges crossing the various branches of the Bacchiglione, which once surrounded the ancient walls like a moat.
Padua is home to one of the oldest universities in the world, the University of Padua, founded in 1222 and where figures such as Galileo Galilei and Nicolaus Copernicus have taught or studied.
Padua is the setting for most of the action in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. There is a play by the Irish writer Oscar Wilde entitled The Duchess of Padua.
Its inhabitants sometimes call Padua "the city of the three withouts," because it is home to the "cafe without doors" (the Pedrocchi Café, which traditionally never closed), "the meadow without grass" (the Prato della Valle, a former bog that has been converted into one of the largest squares in Europe), and the "saint without a name" (because Paduans traditionally refer to Saint Anthony of Padua simply as "the Saint").
